The cast-iron stamp glinted dully in the candlelight - Merry stared off into space while he absently twirled it between his fingers, frowning. A noise at the door caused him to glance there.
"Was there something you were wanting, Pippin?" Merry asked, and abruptly lowered his eyes - he hadn't meant to let his temper sharpen his words, and the shame of seeing his most beloved cousin flinch under them only made him angrier.
"Let it go, cousin," Pippin murmured, placing both hands on his shoulders. "We've chased out the worst of the ruffians, and Frodo's found a grand store of food hidden in the Lockholes. Yule won't be quite as dreary as we had feared."
Merry let his head hang against his chest. "I know. But there will be good folk not coming back from this fight, and it will be years before the forests and smials are back to what they were." Merry folded the letter in front of him, sealed it in wax, and handed it to Pippin. "Take this to Bree. The traders there will see it gets to Strider."
"Someone else can take it," Pippin declared, and bent to kiss the wet on Merry's cheeks.
